Mix Description

mix for a local metalcore / pop punk band. Need feedback on guitars, drums (overheads mainly), vocals

Mix Feedback from others:

  • some things have already been mentioned: the vocals are very dry and not up-front, like you would expect them to be in this kind of music.
Drums sound kinda fake (maybe they are ^^ ). I would use less sub on the kickdrum, more punch, it´s a little spongy. Also gives more headroom for loud mastering.

Stereo image on the drums is too wide for my taste. Imagine a live show where the drumkit spans over six meters. Sometimes cymbals drown out the vocals and guitars, but it´s not a matter of volume, more of the 6k-8k area.

Nicely balanced mix, a little static though. Not too much pupming of compression on the master, that´s good too 🙂

    • Thanks for the detailed feedback. I’m currently in the mastering stage and totally had the “too much sub bass in the kick” realization! I cut down some of the mentioned highs of the cymbals, as they were a bit harsh in mastering as well. Also did some more FX and volume automation which helped the vocals stand out more and the mix to be less static (and copy paste I guess). Question: Would you actually narrow down the panning of the cymbals/toms/rooms to de-widen the drums? E.g. 80-90 LR for cymbals instead of hard panned? I’m doing a lot of LCR panning these days, that’s why they sound so wide.
