Mix Description

Second version of Sol de Otoño. Fixed the reverb and also general mix.
Using a variety of native plugins and waves. For the drums reverb I’m using TSAR-1R reverb from softube.
Bass, guitars are real instruments and drums are midi. Keyboard are played with Nektar Impact midi controller using Syntronik emulation from IK-Multimedia. For guitars I use real stomp boxes (Bug muff, TC-Electronics Nova delay, Kelley Compressor and Boss CE-3 chorus through a Peavey Vypyr Amp). Vocals are recorded with a Shure SM57 thorugh a FocusRite Scarlett Solo.
Mixed with a pair of Presonus E35 monitors and AudioTechnica ATH-M40x headphones.

Mix Feedback from others:

  • Hey there! It’s sounding like everything is pretty washed in reverb and it’s creating some resonant frequencies in the mids. Especially when the vocal is singing. It’s like a constant “woooooooo” sound. This is preventing me from understanding the vocals. It might be a good idea to run the mix by a friend and see if they can tell you what the lyrics are. Since you already know the lyrics it can be easy to bury the vocals.

    • Thanks for checking out 🙂
I see what you say about the reverb. Obviously I have a tendency of overdoing it 😐
My intention this time was trying to add a deep vocal sound (especially during the first part), as the lyrics talk about a moving and bit scary story. I’ll try dropping the reverb in the vocals

    • There are a few plugins that emulate speaker sound over headphones. I use NX from waves. Although not as accurate as true speakers they become quite handy when I need to keep my house quiet

      • Yeah i can hear that your monitoring system is not that great you have a lot of holes in the spectrum. to me the first for you would to get this part sorted out first it’s vital trust me.

      • I usually don’t use headphones for mixing but the monitors. Eventually I check how it sounds over headphones and very occasionally I do basic stuff over headphones but certainly don’t base the mix on that.
I don’t have long on this world on music production and that’s why I still do some “rookie” mistakes. Especially when it comes to reverb which I tend to overdo
