Mix Description

This track started out as an Alchemy synth patch, which became the background synth in the intro and verses. I chose it because I wanted something with movement and interest rather than layering more traditional instrument types and I was trying to work out how to integrate one of these more modern patches into a song. Then I built the vocals and melody around that synth part. The chorus was a lucky accident, somehow the vocals seem to blend nicely with the string pad (which is from Diva). I’m lucky it happened that way because I don’t have the skills to plan it that kind of sound. I mixed the track after reading ‘Mixing Secrets for the Small Studio’ by Mike Senior, which I find to be a really great book. It helped me understand how to set the levels. I’m still finding EQ a bit mysterious. I’m not sure I quite nailed the balance between the kick and the bass, and I’m also not sure if the bass is a little lacking or not. So much to learn, a long road ahead. Any pointers here gratefully received 🙂

Mix Feedback from others:

  • great job – gtr solo felt a bit loud on introduction but seemed to fall into place as it progressed. Really nice clean vocal production. Well done buddy. bass felt a bit pushed for me but that’s subjective of course.

  • Great song and mix. I have only problem with that hi-hat, panned too much right to me. Not so big deal when I am listen on speakers, but on headphones is kind of distracting and unnatural. To avoid this, I will send that hi-hat to another track with 100% wet small reverb and pan it on another side, that track should be really quiet to only add feel of space. Also first entrance of guitar is bit too loud for me, not to much but 1/2 dB.
