Mix Description

New version with added strings and horns. Tried to be subtle so it sounds like it should be this way. Got the idea from another entry that took it way over the top with non-stop orchestra overpowering the mix. Hopefully this is the final since I only have a few more days.

Mix Feedback from others:

  • Great song! Very nice mix, the only thing I hear is a bit too much sub frequency on the drums and bass. If your room is not treated I would suggest listening on a nice pair of headphoned to get a sense of the lower sub frequencies. Everything else sounds amazing. Great job!

    • Thanks, I haven’t been using my Sennheiser cans for a while because the right side has a little rattle. Mixed this with those crappy Audio Technica 50s everyone swears by. Room treatment is needed for sure. I just recently added a pair of Sony hifi towers with 4 8’s in them but I need bass traps so I haven’t used them much. Just Rokit6, Presonus ERIS 3’s and a Avantone 5. None of them tell me anything below around 50hz. Someday I’ll swap out the KRKs for Kali IN8s which should help.

    • Thanks for the great feedback as always. I just brought in my old Sony SS-F7000 4-way hi fi speakers to get a sense of my bass. Not only are they not set up in the ideal spot but I have zero room treatment. I was referencing to The Snake Oil guy’s mix but it’s still my biggest struggle.

      • Gotcha. So, I like the Snake Oil Guy, but I listened to his mix and wasn’t the biggest fan of it honestly lol. Though you’re probably smart for referencing his mix since it was “approved” by the Lewitt people AND band.

  • Nice track. I would say that the vocals are great. Panning, compression are great – appropriate and not too much. The minimal bass/electronic drums work well and sound in place. The cymbals and guitar work well when they come in. The biggest advice I have is that the piano sounds a bit keyboardy/digital and since it’s so central to the track maybe it could use a little eq’ing and less verb? I also hear a few mouth voices after phrases in the begging of the track. Other than that good job.

    • Thank you for the feedback. I think the singer took a drink just before she started. The lip sounds were tough and from all the other mixes I’ve heard, nobody bothered to fix them. I cut out a ton of it by hand but I don’t have OZone RX8 (I think that’s the one) to remove clicks. Anyway, the piano is in fact a digital keyboard. I just watched the promo video that shows them performing for this recording. I went back and forth with that sound. Almost made it more natural with more mids but in the end felt the sparkle sounded better.

    • Oh I just remembered why I added so much reverb to the piano. That track was a stereo file and had phase issues like many stereo pianos in my experience. I decided to narrow the stereo width to help fix that and the reverb I made wide to counter me making the piano almost mono.
