I just wanted to give this a try… 2 hours from download to mix.

Mix Feedback from others:

  • I, too, downloaded these files from Warren. You mixed it in two hours – I’ve spent two hours just bussing the different instruments into their respective parts. My honest opinion of the song you don’t want. There is nothing wrong with your mix. I wish I could have gotten rid of all the verb. The reason the kick drum is buried is because it’s buried in the original tracking. When I’m done I’ll put mine up and we’ll compare.

    • I ended up giving this mix a 2-3 hour shot myself after reading your comment. The Kick and Snare are on a single track and it’s slathered in reverb, I had a few of ideas of how to approach it, at first I thought to separate the kick and the snare with either regroover, or superior drummer, but I really wanted to take the reverb away as well so I threw on the iZotope RX7 de-reverb to kill the verb, and the SPL transient designer to hit the transients specifically on the kick, and it actually didnt sound that bad in the mix, but the reverb actually gives the track a really nice vibe and character. Eventually I just decided what would stay the truest to the original feeling of the song would be to take the simple route with some eq/multiband compression/limiting. I made an AGRESSIVE 7dB boost around 105hZ to get that Kick to thump, and put a limiter on the track to bring up the level, but that snare at the beginning and in the chorus is slightly obnoxious if left unchecked, so to tame it a tad I threw a multiband compressor on it and cut a bit out around 2kHz. I actually like the track and how it turned out. The lead vocal was a bit tricky to clear up, somehow they were super flat yet still had a little bit of distortion, and the mic picked up alot of headphone bleed. But overall it’s a nice track and the multitracks came in pretty well premixed considering what I’m used to. I may post mine later.

    • Thanks for listening…

I’m getting some eye opening with downloading all these songs. I’m amazed at how bad some of the tracking is.
Makes me feel better about what I’ve tracked in he studio.

      • •You did well with what you had. I found myself thinking, “What would I do to perform this live with a small band. I eliminated a lot of unnecessary tracks. Like half of Phil’s vocals and most of the Oh Oh’s.

•I posted my own mix closer to the top here. Feel free to give it a listen and a comment.

  • Nicely done. I think the kick is getting lost a little bit and the vocals seemed to have just a touch too much low mid in the beginning, but it kind of worked itself out as the song went on.

    Cool sound 🙂
