Mix Description

Hi again, the latest original band track recorded, mixed and mastered by me at Top Trax Studio (leeds uk). Really enjoyed making this record with the band and i learnt a lot from it. Hope you like it. Loads going on so a bitch to mix but very enjoyable too. Mixed in cubase 10 pro using 3rd party plugins, Recorded using sure mics on drums, Ribbons on guitars, keyboards and Bass DI, vocals through Neve Portico channel. Enjoy.

Mix Feedback from others:

  • Sounds like Magic Carpet Ride in the beginning 😉 Great mix. I think the guitars are overpowering everything just a hair. The picking guitar seems a bit hot when the vocal is in at 1:54. Other than that, I really like it. Keep em coming! 🙂

    • Thanks for listening, I wanted this mix as loud as my reference track and by pushing it in mastering it has slightly altered the mix balance. Do you have any tips for maintaining the original mix balance when pushing mixes up to -10? Cheers. I will need to go back and compensate the guitars Ievrl so they are a bit quieter and then remaster?

      • If I told you how I do it anywhere else on the internet, I’m sure I’d get death threats, but since it’s on here, I’m hoping it’s safe to share:

So, I also “master” my own stuff(I personally don’t believe it’s “mastering” unless another human is involved, but we’ll call it that for now). And here’s the bad part, I do it ALL in the same project. All my mastering processing is happening on the master bus in my mixing session. So, if something isn’t sitting right, I just adjust right then and there and I will be able to hear how it affects my master. For example, I LOVE having a loud kick/snare. So, a lot of times, I’ll do my mix, add my master bus processing, and then realize that the kick and snare aren’t loud enough. All I have to do is push the volume up on those 2 things and then call it a day.

      • really interesting thank you. I also usually mix with the mastering chain in place, but I ran out of CPU on these mixes as they were larger than i’m used to, as all elements were live. So I mastered this one in a separate session, which meant I was a tad limited with mix changes unless I went back edited and then burnt the 2 mix again and reloaded it into the new session. if im honest with myself I probably was a bit a bit lazy to render stuff, so I completely get why you do that I’m mixing at -14 usually, but I wanted to push this mix to -10/-8 due to the style and I’ve loved the the result of doing that. All that said i’m really happy with the results 😉 ps. I’m working on a slow laid back pop / love song that i’d love to hear your mix of once its finished if you’d be interested? I love your mixes!
