Mix Description

Still unnamed, but it’s our 5th song. What do you think about it?
Guitars: emg pickups, Fender champion 40 amp, Shure sm57 mic, behringer u-phoria UMC22 interface
Bass: Ibanez srmd200, Fender rumble 100 amp, the same mic and interface
Drums: Some pearl drums with Zildjian cymbals 😛 the mics were audiotechnica Mb-DK5 into behringer xenyx x2222usb interface
All mixing done in reaper.
I’m pretty new to mixing and I think it’s my 3rd decent sounding mix, so your review would be really helpful!

Mix Feedback from others:

  • Good job. I think the best move would be to use a reference track of a metal mix you currently like. Right now the snare sounds like it has way more bottom mic than top which is where that metal pop sound comes from. The kick is sounding a little boxy and I think the drums overall could use a little more low end. Also, on the guitars/bass you might want to dial back the gain a little bit because that gets amplified when recording. Or, you could try rolling off some of the high end on them to dial back the crunch.

Keep up the good work. 🙂

    • Hi! Big thanks for your reply. It really matters! Unfortunately I couldn’t do everything I wanted with drums cause I got them with REALLY bad sound and a bit clipped kick… The guitars on the other hand sound pretty sandy and it’s just my amp’s sound, but I don’t really know how to deal with it. Even tho they are sandy, they really lack treble (I have it on 10 on amp) so I have to boost them anyway, especially 6-7k. The only moment the bass uses any distortion is one moment when it’s alone. I also didn’t get what do you mean with the snare. If you have a clue how to deal with sandy distortion I would be thankful. One more thing 😀 if the kick wouldn’t be a bit clipped, wouldn’t it need to be compressed anyway? Maybe the quality would be better but would it really change something? Thanks again!

      • I’d be careful about boosting that frequency range on guitars. I think they were a little too trebly. For the drums it sucks when you’re sent bad tracks, but drums are super easy to trigger and replace with better sounding samples. That’s probably what I would do if the kick was clipped. For the snare it needs less snare sound and more pop/gun shot type sound. It sounds like it was mic’d from the bottom almost?

      • Thanks for help! I don’t know how volume of the mics for snare was set but I can try to eq it a bit other way (I made 2 tracks with 2 sounds and I will make one quieter) and I hope it will work this way. Also it’s hard to deal with those guitars cause without treble boost, they really lack clarity. I’ll try to work on it and maybe post the better version later.

  • I like it!!!!! 3rd mix ever that’s really good sonically!! Timing with snare off in spots but hey man, I could tell you worked your butt off and had a great time as well!!! Pleasantly surprised!! Keep it up!!
