Mix Description

My favorite song from a live gig in 2019. The band definitely played too early that day.

As always on a festival, you have to deal with sub-par recording environment, and sometimes really “funky” instrument settings:
This one here has a buzzsaw electric guitar, where “making space for other instruments” was way overdone. Also an electric violin that was sent as a pre-processed signal – with too much compression, ugly reverb and an overall weird honky sound. Needed lots of rescue work.

Mix Feedback from others:

  • yes, one mono guitar. Can´t pan instruments when they never play the same part either. So it´s about making it a little fake-stereo , just so much that it doesn´t sound like garbage.

I don´t get the thin kick+snare but extra thick toms. It´s the other way round for me on any system, even in the particularly crappy car. Maybe it´s the distortion on the tom tracks that was done wrong in the recording that you hear

    • I just listened again on my phone speaker and maybe I was wrong about the snare, but the kick does still sound a little thin compared to the other drums. It sounds like the toms have a bit of 400-600Hz left in them and also some low end which is making them beefier than the kick.

  • Sounds good! I know live gigs are tough. Seems like something always goes wrong lol. I think the biggest thing I noticed in the mix was the kick and snare being pretty thing compared to the extra thick toms. Do they only have 1 electric guitar player?
