Mix Description

A combination of dancehall, alternative rock and Balkan music I mixed and produced for a local band

I mostly used Waves and FabFilter plugins.

Zakk's Mix Feedback

That intro guitar was really clippy. Might want to check that out and see if you can soften the nylon string slaps with EQ.

I might be out of my realm on this genre, but when the big guitars come in, the drums seem small instead of adding to the impact of the heavy distortion guitars. However, I don’t know if that’s the way it’s supposed to sound? The guitars themselves seem kind of small as well.

    • Thanks for you reply. Most of the material I got from the guitarist, I couldn’t be there to actually dial in the tone. The first guitar was a Godin and he compressed it to give it that sound. I think that what you’re hearing as clipping is maybe the attack of the pick and the fret sound? It didn’t really sound clipped to me and he insisted that he would like it that way. Here they tend to play that way with their Godin guitars, in this Balkan style.

About the distorted guitars, yeah, I know what you’re saying, but the idea wasn’t really to give it that huge rock sound, but rather to have the effect of a distorted guitar on the track. He recorded it through some multi fx unit with a Strat. Not really the best tone, but I tried making the best out of it. I made some more tweaks after this mix, tried adding more weight to them and I blended them with the distorted bass better, to give them more beef. Next time I’ll ask him to record the high gain parts on some other guitar and maybe dial a fuller sound from the start.
