Mix Description

There are those mixes that easily come together and mixes that take time. This is one of those mixes I found myself struggling with. I am not sure exactly what is troubling me. I played all instruments. Mixed in Pro Tools using Plug in Alliance, Soundtoys and a few UAD plug ins.

Mix Feedback from others:

  • It’s a decent mix, balance wise, but it just sounds a bit thin. Needs more punch & energy. I think maybe the instruments lack some low end. The rhythm guitars need to be beefed up and the drums are a little thin as well. If your rhythm instruments need to be clean and clear, then it’s best to offset that with heavier drums & bass. Cymbals need more presence and the toms need more punch. Overall the balance is good and the width is good. I’d also get some saturation sprinkled around on some instruments to warm it up. The performance is great, very tight and precise.

    • I appreciate your input and will apply your points. Your suggestions are what I needed to hear as I failed to consider these items. I do use saturation (Slate VTM, Decapitator and Black Box) sparingly. I am fearful of overdoing it. Thank you for your comments and for listening.

      • No problem. Yeah, don’t be shy on the saturation. Usually I crank it up until I hear it get unpleasant, then back it off. It really helps with the overall crest factor of the mix which will allow for better mastering. I use Waves NLS on my mixbus and really helps to create density and tames transients in the mix. I also use Slate New York, London and Hollywood preamps on a lot of the other tracks to fatten things up. I’ve always believed that mixing different saturators is good for blending all those different algorithms for a smoother, lush effect.
